Museums

Hermitage Museum
The Hermitage Museum is Russia's best art gallery, one of the most prominent museums in the world, and definitely the main tourist attraction of St. Petersburg. The museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great purchased a collection of 255 paintings from Berlin. Today, the Hermitage has about 2.7 million exhibits and displays a full range of world art from Ancient Egypt to early 20th century Europe.
Peter and Paul Fortress
Peter and Paul Fortress was founded by Peter I in 1703. Besides the ancient fortifications, on the grounds of the fortress one can visit the Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral of the early XVII century (architect D.Trezzini) with the burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian tsars, the museum in Trubetskoy bastion prison, expositions: "The History of St.-Petersburg", "The History of the Imperial Mint", "Pechatnya" (Printing Workshop), museum on cosmonautics and missilery; excursion route "Panorama of the Neva" - over the roofs of the fortress' bastions and curtains.
Russian museum
If you only visit one museum whilst visiting Russia, The Russian Museum is probably the best one to choose. This beautiful museum is housed in a number of historical buildings and dedicated to Russian fine art over the ages. This means you can combine history, art and architecture in one short visit. The state museum was established in 1895 in St Petersburg and was opened to visitors three years later. It currently contains a collection of approximately 400 000 exhibits and is a stunning tribute to Russian art.
St.-Isaac's Cathedral
St Isaac's Cathedral is one of the symbols of St Petersburg and Russia. This architectural marvel has dominated the city's skyline for 150 years. With its elaborate decoration and artistic mosaic techniques, many claim it to be one of the most impressive major cathedrals in Russia. Apart from being a church where services are held on significant religious holidays, it is also a museum. And if one dares to take a 300 step climb to the cathedral's colonnade, they will surely be breath taken enjoying the stupendous panoramic view of the city.
Jussupov Palace
On a quiet stretch of the Moika River stands a long yellow building, which was once the residence of the wealthy and respected Yusupov family and which saw one of the most dramatic episodes in Russia's history - the murder of Grigory Rasputin. In 1916 a group of the city's noble elite, including one of the Grand Dukes and led by the prominent anglophile Prince Felix Yusupov, conspired to kill the one man who they felt threatened the stability of an already war-torn Russian Empire.
Pushkin
Tsarskoe Sel ('Tsar's Village' in Russian) was a summer residence of Russia's tsars. It is a gorgeous town on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, with beautiful green parks and alleyways. It's different parks represent the distinct personalities of various Russian tsars. The ostentatious park of Catherine with its baroque style architecture comes in stark contrast to the simple park of Alexander.
Peterhof
The world-famous "capital of fountains" or "Russian Versailles" was founded by Peter I. In 1918 the main summer residence of the Russian emperors became state property and by 1941 ten museums of art and history had been opened on its premises. During the war of 1941-45, Peterhof was razed to the ground by the Nazis. Restoration work began in as early as 1944, after the Nazis were expelled from the town, and, for the most part, the ensemble was returned to its former splendour. The first fountain began to operate once more in 1946. The Hermitage pavilion reopened in 1952 and the Great Palace in 1964. In 1966 the Great Cascade was fully reconstructed. Restoration work is, however, still in progress.
Pavlovsk
Pavlovsk is 30 km from Saint Petersburg (Russia), just to the south of Tsarskoye Selo. It is home to Pavlovsk Palace, one of the most splendid residences of the Russian imperial family. It is part of the World Heritage Site Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments. The Pavlovsk palace is probably the best preserved of Russian imperial residences outside the capital.
